In the footsteps of Edith Dircksey Cowan OBE

The Karrakatta Club is committed to empowerment for women and social justice for women, children and families. Our Advocacy Series joins with others to create thought-provoking presentations examining issues that stand in the way of fair and thoughtful progress.

Today we bring together groups of women from many different organisations, to help us learn what needs to be done to bring about positive change for women, children, and families. We want to support their work and use our collective voice for the betterment of society.

Law Week 2021 and the centenary year of Edith Cowan’s first speech to the West Australian Parliament coalesced on 20 May as perfect timing for a thought-provoking collaboration between The Law Society of Western Australia and the Karrakatta Club.

Entitled The Women Should Have a Voice: The Future of Women’s Social Justice in WA, guests heard an enlightened panel from the legal and other professions, women’s groups, and the Karrakatta Club. It looked back one hundred years to identify social issues of concern in Western Australia in 1921, examining the advocacy issues promoted by Edith Cowan, and issues that continue to be unresolved, while also identifying new issues facing Western Australia.

The question was asked, “Have these issues been solved, and what would Edith Cowan focus on today?”.

Each year the Karrakatta Club determines issues it believes need a light to be shone upon them to identify a subject for the annual Advocacy Series. Series to date are listed below.
